Virtual Support Group | Mother's Milk Club | WIC | Galveston Health District

New Clinic Location | Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

WIC just opened a new part time WIC Clinic in Galveston. This clinic is located in the Moody Early Childhood Center. The address is 1110 21st St. Galveston, TX. Staff are available for WIC appointments on Tuesday mornings from 8am until 12 noon. They are also available on Thursday afternoons from 1pm until 5pm.

Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) Program

Great News! The VA have launched their VTS Program (Veteran Transportation System). They are currently limited on vehicles, but they are growing their fleet. The rides are supplied for high need veterans with scheduled appointments. Requests need to be put in at least 4 days in advance to arrange the rides. They currently serve a 60 mile radius to the VA Main Medical Center.

City of Galveston| Tenant-Based Rental Assistance Program (TBRA)

The primary purpose of the Federally funded HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME) Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) is to assist low-income individual households who need to help paying their rent. The program also provides assistance with security deposits. All applicants must be referred to Grants & Housing Department (G&H) by a local non-profit social service agency.  No application will be accepted without a referral.

Catholic Charities' Beacon of Hope Center is having a drive-thru food distribution this morning. No appointment is needed for the Super Site distribution, but families wanting food must come in a vehicle. People who travel on foot can be safely served at the Beacon of Hope Center other days of the week by appointment.

Getting Healthy for 2022 - A Research Project Volunteer Opportunity | UTMB

The Middle-Aged Crutch Study (MAC) is a National Institute of Health-funded study that examines the changes in the structure and function of skeletal muscle during periods of disuse and rehabilitation in middle-aged men and women. What this means for potential participants is that we will ask them to wear a leg sling and move around on crutches for 1 week (you will not be able to bear weight on one leg). We will ask participants to wear the leg sling all the time except when showering and sleeping. This one-week period of physical inactivity is followed by two weeks of rehabilitation.

If you are interested after reading the consent form and feel you qualify (see below), the next step is to set up an official pre-screen phone call. This usually takes about 20 minutes. Just write me back with a date/time Mon-Fri 9a-2p, the number you'd like me to call and we’ll get it scheduled.

Eligibility

-BMI between 20-30kg/m2
-Generally healthy, no medical conditions
-No injuries or illness within the last 3 months


Volunteers Will Be Asked To Participate In The Following

-Involvement in the study is 6-8 weeks with approximately 11 visits
-Multiple weekday study visits at UTMB Galveston (Mon-Wed-Fri)
-DEXA scan
-Several muscle biopsies and blood draws

Compensation
-$1350
